Book Review: Time for Truth by OS Guinness

Time for Truth by OS Guinness

In his book, Time for Truth, OS Guinness discusses truth from the viewpoint of postmodernism compared with Christianity.  One of his major themes is that truth is not only essential for freedom, it is freedom.  He starts by saying that this is a "small book on a large topic".  His book is not meant to be comprehensive.  This leads me to the first point...
I would like to make about this book:  If you are interested in the specific topic of Truth (Big T - Truth), then this will be a good book for you to get in to.  As he says it is not comprehensive, but with that allows the reader to think and articulate certain claims that he makes much deeper than the book will go.  In other words, you can spend as much time going through this book as you would like, and you will still have more to go through.  I read this in one day, and enjoyed it, although it seems he gets a bit technical with out satisfying the wandering mind of the reader.  I would rate this as an average level apologetics book about Truth.  In other words, I would be sure to have a good basic understanding of logic, apologetics, reason, faith, and philosophy.

Guinness is clear about his six objectives in his book, which helps the reader to stay on task while reading.

1.  He asserts that this is small book for a large topic, and it is not meant to be comprehensive. (pg 14)
2.  He discusses his concern over the crisis that truth is in now.  His focus is more on the practical approach of truth rather than the philosophical issues (although he readily admits they are there). (pg 14)
3.  He is not arguing against the postmodern view on behalf of the modern view, he actually regards both as bad.  He is arguing that there must be a 3rd proposition in the discussion of Truth. (pg 15)
4.  He argues that postmodernism is a watershed movement for the United States in particular. (pg 16)
5.  He argues that the issue of Truth has a far deeper moral and political seriousness than it receives now. (pg 16)
6.  In his final objective he will state that in no way does he live up to the version of Truth that he will provide, but will give an applicable answer to how we can move forward in our quest for Truth as a believer. (pg 17)
**(Each of the six objectives were taken from "Time for Truth" on pages 14-17)

Over all I would suggest this book as a good starter book for the specific inquiry of Truth.
