In this audio debate, Dr. Craig and Dr. Harris discuss whether or not the foundation for morality is natural or supernatural. In other words, Dr. Craig posits that the only sound foundation for objective morality is God, while Dr. Harris argues that there can be a foundation for objective morality with out God.I will give you a quick review and then allow you to listen for yourself.
Both Dr. Craig, and Dr. Harris agree that there is objective morality. The argument is regarding the foundation for such objective morality. Very quickly Dr. Craig states the purpose for the debate. He argues two basic contentions:
1. If God exists, then we have a sound foundation for objective moral values and duties.
2. If God does not exist then we do not have a sound foundation for objective moral values and duties.
Dr. Craig is not arguing that God exists, he is simply arguing the two contentions.
Dr. Harris unfortunately spends the majority of his time attacking people for believing in God. Dr. Harris uses the problem of evil and suffering to defend his argument that it is foolish to believe in God. Dr. Harris strays off topic consistently from the beginning. It is unfortunate that the moderator of this debate did not stop the debate due to Dr. Harris not staying on topic.
In my personal opinion of this debate between Dr. William Lane Craig and Dr. Sam Harris, I feel that Dr. Craig completely destroys Dr. Harris, both logically, philosophically, and systematically. It is unfortunate to me that a great deal of time and energy that was put forth by Dr. Craig was wasted by Dr. Harris who would not follow the rules of the debate.
The debate is approximately 2 hours long, please enjoy and let me know your thoughts!
